Electric Trucks and Commercial Fleets:
The Next Frontier for EVs

The commercial vehicle industry is embarking on a transformative shift toward a more sustainable future. As we usher in the new era of electric vehicles, commercial fleets are also embracing the change, recognising opportunities for innovation, cost savings and environmental leadership in the sector.

Volvo Electric Trucks

Electric trucks offer significant long-term savings through reduced fuel and maintenance costs. Their zero tailpipe emissions contribute to lower carbon output, aligning with our company’s sustainability goals. Taking the Volvo FM Electric as an example, a productive transport solution for cities and urban areas- with a range of 300 km, it can carry up to 44 tonnes of gross combined weight while maintaining low emissions and noise levels.

Additionally, electric trucks improve driver comfort and satisfaction for a more enjoyable driving experience especially for long-distance trips. Driven by innovation, the all-electric drivetrain, Mack MD Electric Truck delivers impressive power while reducing emissions and maintenance costs. It also comes with new premium driver’s seat, featuring increased seat recline and adjustable lumber support. The driver and passenger’s seat belts are adjustable to increase its safety and comfort feature.

Equipped with cutting-edge autonomous driving technologies, these electric trucks deliver instant torque to achieve remarkable acceleration. Compared to diesel engines, electric motors provide maximum torque, enabling quick and responsive acceleration while achieving greater power output thanks to the efficiency of their electric drivetrains.

These electric vehicles enhance safety and efficiency while advancements in battery technology allow electric trucks to address range anxiety and reduce charging time for greater effectiveness.

The JAC Motors N55EV, the highest selling 5.5 tonne electric truck in Hong Kong, is equipped with CATL batteries with a total energy of 106.95kWh. The accelerating performance from 0-50km/h is 8 seconds with a torque at 1200Nm. When it is fully charged, the N55EV has a maximum endurance of 260km. Using a fast-charging device of up to 120kW, the charging time from 0-80% can be completed in one hour.

Transitioning to commercial fleet and electric trucks requires time and resources. A phased implementation is crucial to minimise operational disruptions, allowing effective adaptation to new technology, personnel training and establishment of operational workflows. Reliable and extensive charging infrastructure plays a vital role in maintaining work efficiency. Together, these measures pave the way for the sustainable adoption of electric mobility.
