Volvo FH16 780 named International Truck of the Year Australasia
The Volvo Trucks FH16 780 has been named 2025 International Truck of The Year Australasia (ToYA) at the Brisbane Truck Show.
Panel Chair and PowerTorque Editor Tim Giles, explained the decision in favour of the FH16 780, “780hp and 3,800Nm are impressive numbers, and we can talk them as much as we like, but it’s that ‘seat-of-the-pants’ feeling that tells the driver whether the torque is doing the job out on the road.”
“These numbers definitely become real when the driver puts the truck to work, this level of power and torque makes tough freight tasks a relative breeze and the driver can always feel confident the driveline can handle our high masses in difficult conditions,” he continued.
“The extra power and torque are coupled with the excellent driver experience which Volvo have developed over the years. There’s a quiet effortlessness which the driver feels as they get into a climb at those high masses, and the way the driveline copes in an unfussy way with varying gradients is impressive.”
2024 and 2025 saw the addition of a number of new vehicles and features to the Volvo Trucks range, from the sleek new FH Aero to the FH16 780 powered by a Euro 6 D17 engine capable of delivering 780hp at 1,700rpm.
“It’s an incredibly exciting time to be a part of Volvo Trucks”, says Scott Holt, General Manager for Volvo Trucks New Zealand. “Over the past 18 months or so our range of vehicles has more than doubled, giving customers a wide range of options that can be tailored to their operations.
“As well as featuring the most powerful engine ever put in a Volvo truck, the FH16 780 is capable of operating with taller final drive ratios delivering exceptional fuel efficiency ‒ a vital part of Volvo Trucks’ ambition to achieve zero emissions.”
“I believe that the current range of trucks are our best yet in terms of safety, efficiency and productivity and it’s great to see that recognised within our industry.”
The FH16 780 is equipped with the latest active and passive safety systems from the recently launched CMS (Camera Monitoring System) for clear views all around the vehicle to Volvo Dynamic Steering and Pilot Assist, providing active lane keeping while cruise control is engaged.
